The nation’s earliest railroads were built in the 1820s and 1830s. Baltimore & Ohio, was the nation’s first railroad. By 1850, an extensive railroad network had begun to take shape adding railroads such as Delaware & Hudson, Pennsylvania, Boston & Providence, Union Pacific, Southern and many, many more reaching west with the economic expansion.
The United States has 160,000 miles of rail extending into Canada & Mexico. Today’s railroads are privately owned, primarily freight, Amtrak being charged with nationwide passenger service and Metropolitan commuter service run by independent operators. Class 1 railroads today consist of Union Pacific, BNSF, CSX, Canadian National, Norfolk Southern, and the latest merger, Canadian Pacific Kansas City. Over 600 Shortline railroads provide service for one in 5 railcars.
